Artist's Statement

In my work, I am concerned primarily with light and atmosphere, as well as mood.  My tonalist paintings have been called evocative, lyrical and poetic.  I endeavor to create a sense of quiet dignity in the landscapes I portray, evoking an inner standstill which allows a moment of reflection for the viewer.  I use traditional techniques such as use of transparent color, glazes and scumbling and a limited but rich palette to create these atmospheric effects.  I am most influenced by late 19th century tonalist landscape painters but I incorporate a modern sensibility into my work through spare design and choice of color.

Biography

Deborah Paris practiced law for over twenty years before returning to her first love - painting.  Her moody, tonal paintings pay homage to the American landscape and to transcendent moments at particular times of the day.  She has been featured in American Artist, Southwest Art and The Pastel Journal.  In December 2004 she was named an Artist to Watch by Southwest Art Magazine.  Her work has been shown at the Laguna Art Museum, the Albuquerque Museum of Art, and the Panhandle-Plains Museum. In 2006 her work was featured in two new books, Landscapes of New Mexico (Fresco Fine Art Publications) and Plein Air New Mexico (Jack Richeson Art Publications).  Recent exhibitions of her work in Texas include Salon International, Greenhouse Gallery, San Antonio, Texas, Plein Air Texas Invitational, Southwest Gallery, Dallas, Texas and the Panhandle Plains Museum Invitational, Canyon, Texas.

Deborah and her husband, Steve Whalen, moved to Clarksville in May 2007. Her recent work is inspired by the rural landscape of northeast Texas.
